Las Nike SB P-Rod 9 son unas de las zapatillas que más ruido han hecho en lo que va de 2015, y por ello teníamos muchas ganas de probarlas y ver si de verdad funciona toda esa «tecnología» que llevan. Así pues, más que como un review llegamos a afrontarlo como si se tratara de los cazadores de mitos. Nike SB nos envió las P-Rod 9 Elite, y tras meterlas al microondas empezamos a patinarlas lo más duro posible y sólo de un lado (prácticamente nada de switch) para así ver el rendimiento real de una de las zapatillas más innovadoras del momento, y el resultado fue sorprendente.
CONSTRUCCIÓN
El último modelo de las Paul Rodríguez tienen un par de distintivos que llaman mucho la atención en cuanto a la construcción. El primer detalle sorprendente es que incluye una especie de cuerdas en los herretes que, pese a parecer puramente estéticas, sirven para no castigar tanto a los cordones. Otro punto destacable es la plantilla, que además de ser una Nike Air muy gruesa con transpiración cuenta con una cámara de aire en el talón que te protege de los golpes más duros. Por lo demás, es un modelo similar a las P-Rod 8 pero con el perfil ligeramente más bajo, con menos curva en el interior de la zapatilla y notablemente más finas que todos los anteriores modelos, especialmente las P-Rod 7.
SUJECIÓN Y COMODIDAD
Este es quizá el punto más favorable para las P-Rod 9, y es que la sujeción es casi inmejorable. Se podrían llegar a patinar sin cordones, aunque no están pensadas para ello (como si lo están, por ejemplo, las Emerica Figueroa), y con que los ates usando dos de los seis herretes ya es más que suficiente. En el talón no encontrarás licra, ni nada en especial, pero la espuma sujeta perfectamente el tendón de Aquiles y lo protege de cualquier rebote de la tabla.
TACTO SOBRE LA TABLA
Como puede pasar en distintos modelos de Nike SB, al estrenarlas se hacen un poco duras (aunque las metas al microondas), y por eso durante la primera hora no serás capaz de apreciar lo bien que pueden llegar a funcionar. Eso sí, una vez ya están estrenadas la cosa sólo va a mejor, y en poco tiempo el pie queda adaptado perfectamente. Una de las sensaciones que puedes tener al patinar las P-Rod 9 es que te sientes como si patinaras unas Janoski (finas y con un tacto inmejorable), pero con el pie tan protegido como si llevaras unas P-Rod 7.
Las pequeñas cámaras de gel sí que hacen su función, así como esa «tecnología» que sirve para que no notes los impactos. Puedes caer a primo las veces que quieras que el pie no se verá afectado, y este detalle lo aprecias mucho más cuando estrenas tus próximas zapatillas (si es que no son las P-Rod 9 de nuevo).
RESISTENCIA Y DESGASTE
Al tratarse de una zapatilla tan fina e innovadora, lo primero que se te viene a la mente es que la destruirás en cuestión de horas, pero lo cierto es que la resistencia es otro punto que ha mejorado Nike SB con las P-Rod (aunque tampoco ha sido nunca uno de sus problemas). La zapatilla destrozada de la imagen ha sobrevivido a más de 30 horas sin patinar switch y centrando el desgaste en el mismo punto, por lo que el rendimiento es muy destacable.
No hay ninguna pieza que se desprenda, ni ninguna costura que se rompa con facilidad. El desgaste va a la pieza principal de la punta y se agujerea en el lugar donde incidas más, no hay ningún punto más débil que los demás.
Como ya hemos comentado, las pequeñas cuerdas que suben por el lateral de la zapatilla y salen por el herrete protegen los cordones, pero no lo suficiente como para evitar que se rompan después de muchas horas de uso.
Así como algunas marcas tienen problemas con la resistencia de la pieza del talón, o incluso de la plantilla, las P-Rod 9 están bien preparadas para ese desgaste y tampoco dan problemas de resistencia en este punto.
La suela, siguiendo la línea de Nike, es resistente a más no poder, y también será muy difícil de gastar. Puedes patinarlas durante una eternidad y seguirá haciendo ese chirrido al plantar el talón al suelo cuando quieras frenar.
CONCLUSIONES
Sin lugar a dudas, las Nike SB P-Rod 9 Elite pueden ser consideradas como unas de las mejores zapatillas del mercado. El único inconveniente que se le puede poner es su precio, que asciende a 115€, pero ya son muchos los modelos que se quedan en este precio y con las P-Rod tienes garantizado que funcionan y que no se rompen fácilmente. Si buscas chollos y calzado low-cost las P-Rod no serán tu elección, pero si quieres algo cómodo, que proteja el pie y con mucho tacto, aquí tienes lo que buscas.

The Nike SB Paul Rodriguez 9 Elite are one of the most remarkable skate shoes of the year, and that’s why we were really looking forward to test and review them. Another reason why we wanted to write about them is that we weren’t sure if you can put so much «technology» (as Nike SB constatly announces) on a skate shoe, so we didn’t hesitate when Nike SB offered us the opportunity to try them.
To start things off with this new model, we put them in the microwaves and we started skating them as hard as we could. We did it only regular stance, so we would damage them as much as possible and therefore we would know if they work as they’re supposed to or not, and the result was beyond surprising.
CONSTRUCTION
The latest Paul Rodriguez’ pro model have a couple of details that make them different to the others when it comes to its construction. The first one is those kind of tiny laces that come from the bottom of the shoe to the aglet. Although it seems to be purely aesthetic, they have the task of protecting the laces.
The insoles are another noteworthy issue, and that’s because they’re not only thick Nike Air insoles, but they also include gel chambers that back up your heels when you need it.
Regarding the rest of the shoe, the P-Rod 9 are pretty similar to the eight edition of Paul’s shoes, but with a lower profile and a flatter inner part of the shoe. Moreover, these shoes are notably thiner than the older models, specially if we compare them to the seventh one.
COMFORT AND STABILITY
This is probably the category where these shoes are better, and that’s because the stability is almost unbeatable. You could even skate them without laces although they’re not meant to do that (as they are, for example, the Emerica Figueroa) and you only have to lace them up two of the six aglets to feel comfortable enough.
You won’t find lycra, nor any kind of special material, at the rear part of the shoe, but the foam they have on the Achilles tendon protect and hold perfectly your feet.
BOARDFEEL
As it might happen with different Nike SB models, it’s hard to use them when you break them in (even if you microwave them), and that’s why you can’t really appreciate how good they are until you’ve skated them for about an hour. Once they’re broken in, you feel they are perfectly adapted and you can skate them with no problem.
One of the feelings you may have while skating them is that you’re riding with Janoskis on your feet (cause you feel really comfortable and you perfectly feel the board and its griptape) that protect and endure like the P-Rod 7.
The small gel chambers really do their function, as well as that «technology» that is meant to protect you from the biggest impacts you might feel. You can land primo as many times as you want and you won’t feel that pain you feel with many other skate shoes, and that’s something you actually appreciate whenever you skate with another shoes (if they’re not another pair of P-Rod 9).
DURABILITY & WEAR
As we’re talking about a thin and innovative skate shoe, the first thing that comes to your mind is that you’ll blow it up in a matter of hours, but Nike SB actually improved the durability of the P-Rods with this new edition (although it hasn’t really been a problem for them).
The shoe on the images has been skated for more than 30 years (no switch stance) and focusing the damage on the same points, so we can conclude the efficiency is notable. There are no pieces that fall off, nor any kind of seam that could suffer more than the others.
As we already commented, those small laces that go up the side the shoe protect the laces, but not enough to avoid them to break after many hours of skating.
Many brands have different problems with the rear part of the shoe, but the P-Rod 9 are ready for that possible damage in the zone, and that means you won’t suffer pain in the area.
The Zoom Air sole, as usual in Nike SB, is beyond resistant, and it’s also really hard to wear out. You can skate them for a long time and you’ll keep listening to that creak while slowing down with your heel on the ground.
CONCLUSIONES
Without a doubt, the Nike SB P-Rod 9 Elite can be considered as one of the best skate shoes out there right now. The only disadvantage we could mention is the price (they are around 115€ in Europe), but that’s something is getting common nowadays. Anyway, even if the price is high, you know you’re paying for something that really works, and you perfectly know you’re not going to destroy them in a week.
If you’re looking for a low-cost shoe this is not your choice, but if you are looking for something comfortable that will protect your feet with the best boardfeel possible, here’s what you’re looking for.
